New Hampshire Young Democrats Unveil

"603 Forward: The Campaign to Elect Young Democrats"

Over Two Dozen NHYDs Running for State Representative

Manchester, NH (June 30, 2008): New Hampshire Young Democrats (NHYD) President Garth Corriveau introduced Young Democratic candidates for state representative today and was joined by and men and women from across the Granite State to unveil "603 Forward: The Campaign to Elect Young Democrats." "603 Forward" is the NHYD campaign to promote and support the 31 young Democratic candidates running for State Representative.

"NHYD is committed to bringing fresh, new perspectives and judgment to our state government in 2009 and that starts with electing Young Democrats to office this November. No generation has more at stake in this election than New Hampshire's young adults," said Corriveau. "Over the last several elections, young adults have become a crucial voting bloc in New Hampshire."

The Democratic Party has seen growing turnout over the last several elections and the young members of our party that have played a major role in the new energy and excitement around the Democratic Party. The 31 young Democrats running for State Representative are the most to run in recent memory and far more than the "handful" of young Republican candidates. Meanwhile, young adults made history in the 2008 "First-in-the-Nation" New Hampshire Primary comprising over 16% of the electorate, which was a larger percentage of the vote than senior citizens for the first time.

"Just like everyone else, I have been inspired by the incredible Democratic candidates that stand at the top of the ticket," said Douglas Lindner, candidate for State Representative from Manchester and the Chair of the NHYD Young Candidates Caucus. "With Sen. Barack Obama, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, Gov. John Lynch, Rep. Paul Hodes and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, leading the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, young voters have good reason to be inspired and we are looking forward to working alongside them to help put our state and our country back on the right track."

Young Democrats are voting and running for office in record numbers. As a result of this enthusiasm, N.H. Young Democrats are organized, united and ready for change. The 31 Young Democrats running for State Representative are listed below.

Is the House about to get a youth infusion?
Younger Candidates Join This Year's Ballot
June 16, 2008

By SARAH LIEBOWITZ
Concord Monitor staff writer

Gray hair is a common sight at New Hampshire's House of Representatives, which is filled with those who have the time and financial wherewithal to work for $100 a year. But come next session, the chamber could look a bit more youthful.

Spurred by this year's presidential race, political ambition, and a desire to inject some youth into the 400-member House, younger candidates are taking to the campaign trail this year.

On the Democratic side, between 20 and two dozen candidates younger than 35 - some of them not old enough to legally drink alcohol - are running, said Garth Corriveau, president of the New Hampshire Young Democrats. At least 15 of those candidates are 25 or younger, said Kevin Hodges, director of the House Democratic Caucus.

STATEMENT FROM NH YOUNG DEMOCRATS PRESIDENT ON END OF PRIMARY SEASON
New Hampshire Young Democrats Unite Behind Presumptive Nominee Sen. Barack Obama

Manchester, NH (June 4, 2008): The following is a statement from New Hampshire Young Democrats' President Garth Corriveau regarding Senator Barack Obama becoming the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democratic Party:

"After an incredible primary campaign, yesterday the Democratic Party and the United States made history. For the first time in the history of western democracies, a person of color has been elected as nominee for the highest political office in the land. Senator Barack Obama's message of change, and especially of hope, has inspired America's young people. He certainly has inspired me. Millions of first time voters have rallied to Sen. Obama's vision for America. Now that Sen. Obama is our presumptive nominee, it is time to unite as Young Democrats and restore hope to the American people and people around the globe."

"As we congratulate Sen. Obama on his victory, we also celebrate the entire field of Democratic candidates. Sen. Hillary Clinton shattered countless glass ceilings over the course of this race. During her campaign she stood up for millions of Americans, including young people, and gave them a voice as she has done throughout her career. I firmly believe that as this particular chapter appears to be coming to a close for Sen. Clinton, she will continue to work tirelessly on our behalf and be a true leader for America."

Corriveau continued, "Inspired by the Democratic candidates in the First-in-the-Nation Primary, New Hampshire Young Democrats were more excited and engaged than ever before. We made history last January when, for the first time in the Granite State, young voters represented a greater percentage of the electorate than seniors."

"As Sen. Obama said in his speech on the night of the N.H. Primary, 'we are not as divided as our politics suggests.' It is now time for all of us Young Democrats to unite behind Sen. Obama and to focus on the general election. New Hampshire Young Democrats will be the driving force behind electing Democrats on November 4th."

New Hampshire Young Democrats Elect New Vice-President of Public Affairs

Evan Carlson Elected As NH Young Dems Gear Up For General Election

Manchester, NH (May 17, 2008): On Monday, the New Hampshire Young Democrats (NHYD) Executive Board met and elected Evan Carlson as their new Vice-President of Public Affairs. The unanimous vote comes after Katherine Judd, who had previously held the position, left to pursue out-of-state professional opportunities.

"We are thrilled to have Evan as our VP of Public Affairs," said Garth Corriveau, President of the NHYD. "He has a lot of experience working with the media here in New Hampshire which will be very useful as the New Hampshire Young Democrats gear up for the general election."

During the historic 2006 election cycle which saw unprecedented victories for Democrats in New Hampshire, Carlson served as Deputy Press Secretary for the New Hampshire Democratic Party. He was later named Press Secretary and managed communications for the state party as Democrats in Concord before serving as the New Hampshire Press Secretary for Senator Joe Biden during his Primary campaign.

The election of Carlson comes as the NHYD begin to organize summer events to gear up for the election this fall.

"Young adults made history in the 2008 NH Primary," said Corriveau. "They made up over 16% of the electorate, for the first time accounting for a higher percentage of the vote than senior citizens. NHYD is going to build upon this historic mobilization of young voters and bring new visionary leadership to government."

The organization will kick off its political campaign this Saturday at the New Hampshire Democratic Convention at McLaughlin Middle School in Manchester where they will unveil The 603 in '08. The pamphlet is political guide for young Democratic voters and candidates and for campaigns seeking the support of NH's young voters.

New Hampshire Young Democrats Elect New Leadership

President Garth Corriveau to Continue Post-Primary Momentum With Ambitious Agenda

Concord, N.H. – The New Hampshire Young Democrats (NHYD) elected a fresh board of leaders to build on what was easily the most successful year in the organization's history.

Garth Corriveau was elected President of the NH Young Democrats.  Corriveau, 31, is an attorney in Nashua, a Manchester resident and previously served as NHYD Treasurer.  He takes the reigns from Gray Chynoweth, who resigned in order to work with the Hillary Clinton campaign after two years as NHYD President.

"We just wrapped-up a very busy and productive year for the NH Young Democrats, and I plan on continuing that momentum," says Corriveau.  "We have an ambitious but achievable agenda for 2008 that includes mobilizing voter turnout in NH's youth-concentrated areas, building our grassroots youth network, expanding our membership and holding new, improved and more frequent public events."

The official youth arm of the New Hampshire Democratic Party (NHDP), the Young Dems greatly expanded their visibility and influence with Young Democrats nationwide by hosting the 2007 YDA Fall Conference in November 2007.  The Conference, held for the first time in New Hampshire, was the best attended in YDA history with more than 500 attendees and was highlighted by keynote speaker President Bill Clinton.

NHYD also elected the following young leaders to their board:
Katie Judd, Vice President of Public Affairs
Dave Allen, Vice President of Political Affairs
Kristin Mueller, Secretary
Joe Scully, National Committee Man
Jess Clark, National Committee Woman

The board is currently seeking and reviewing candidates for NHYD Treasurer.  Each member of the NHYD Board of Directors also serves on the NHDP State Committee.

"This is a dynamic organization, with engaged, active and passionate members," adds Corriveau.  "Together we will work hard to achieve our goals and engage New Hampshire's Democratic youth."

The New Hampshire Young Democrats is an inclusive, statewide organization of 18-36 year olds that exists to excite, engage and involve young people in New Hampshire's political community; mentor, recruit and empower a new generation of New Hampshire leaders; advance progressive ideals and values; and elect young Democrats.  For more information, visit www.nhyoungdemocrats.org.

Richardson Surrogate on Celebrity Layover with NH Young Democrats
Richardson Surrogate Judge Reinhold on Celebrity Layover with New Hampshire Young Democrats at Airport Diner in Manchester on December 16 at 10:00 a.m.

MANCHESTER, NH - With Oprah gone, Granite Staters may be wondering who might show up next from the land of glitz and glamour. How about a visitor from the land of big hair and acid-wash jeans?

On December 16, actor Judge Reinhold (best known for his roles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Beverly Hills Cop) will be stumping for Democratic presidential candidate Governor Bill Richardson. He’ll be “flying” into the Airport Diner in Manchester with his wife Amy to meet the New Hampshire Young Democrats (NHYD) for a Q&A brunch at 10:00 a.m.

“When celebrities visit our small state, it presents a rare opportunity for us,” says Katie Judd, NHYD media coordinator and event organizer. “A recognizable face from television or the movies can attract fresh faces to our organization that might be a little on the fence about political involvement. I think it will only benefit our members to hear why someone like Judge Reinhold would get involved in politics and why he’s out supporting his candidate.”

Reinhold's first major film role was as high school senior Brad Hamilton in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and he later played Detective Billy Rosewood in Beverly Hills Cop. He has now made more than 75 films. At the 1994 Emmy Awards, Reinhold was nominated for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series” for his role as Elaine’s boyfriend Aaron “The Close-Talker” on the popular TV series Seinfeld.

Judge and his wife Amy plan to mingle with the NHYD crowd, answer questions, talk about the issues that matter to young voters and discuss his involvement on the Richardson campaign.

“I anticipate he’ll get questions about what it was like work with the famed 80’s ‘brat packers’ or with Jerry Seinfeld,” laughs Garth Corriveau, NHYD Treasurer. “But that’s to be expected. There has been a lot of attention on what the youth vote could do in 2008, and the issues that face our country are serious, but it’s nice to be able to mix that in with something fun and a new perspective.”

Airport Diner, a member of The Common Man family of restaurants in New Hampshire, is pleased to host the event, and encourages all young voters to be active and engaged in the primary process.

Please contact Katie Judd, NHYD Secretary and Media Coordinator, at (603)-xxx-xxxx for more information on the NH Young Democrats. For information about attending the event, please contact nhyoungdems@gmail.com.

ELIZABETH EDWARDS, HONORARY NH YOUNG DEMOCRAT
First Annual John and Robert F. Kennedy Awards Reception to Feature Edwards, Honor Mike Vlacich and Raise Funds for NH Young Democrats

CONCORD, NH - On October 26, Elizabeth Edwards will join the NH Young Democrats (NHYD) for their First Annual John and Robert F. Kennedy Awards Reception at the IBEW Hall in Concord. Elizabeth Edwards, an attorney, activist and wife of presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Edwards, will give her thoughts on involving young people and advancing progressive values in 2008.

“We are honored that Elizabeth Edwards accepted our invitation to speak at our inaugural event,” says Garth Corriveau, Treasurer of the NHYDs and co-chair of the event. “Elizabeth is an inspiration to many people, and I think it’s great that our members will have the opportunity to meet her and have a conversation about what matters to young people in the Granite State.”

The newly created “C. Arthur Soucy NHYD Lifetime Achievement Award” will be presented to Mike Vlacich, state director of economic development at DRED, former deputy chief of staff and campaign manager for Gov. Lynch, former NH Democratic Party executive director and Young Democrat. The “John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Young Democrat of the Year Award” will go to a deserving young Democrat in the state.

The cocktail reception is being hosted by the Merrimack County Democrats to help their younger counterparts raise funds that will go towards hosting the National 2007 Young Democrats of America (YDA) Fall Conference in Manchester in November. Over 300 young Democrats from across the country are expected to attend.

“We were eager to host this reception for the young Democrats,” says Rob Werner, chair of the Merrimack County Democrats. “They’ve been working hard to bring this conference to New Hampshire and show the rest of the country how exciting it is to be here. They don’t have the kind of money that their party elders do, so we felt it was our duty to help out.”

"It's great that the young Democrats are having this event, and honoring Mike Vlacich," adds Jen Kuzma, executive director of the NHDP. "Mike is an exemplary leader and I've learned a lot from him over the years. He has made it a priority to invest in young democrats around the state and for that we thank him."

Auction for One-of-a-Kind Book & Memorabilia Collection Autographed by All 2008 Democratic Presidential Candidates to Run May 31 through June 7 on eBay

CONCORD, NH - Political junkies, get your bidders cards ready. As a unique fundraising effort, the NH Young Democrats (NHYDs) have assembled an unprecedented collection of candidates’ books for auction, called the “2008 N.H. Presidential Primary Bookshelf.” An achievement perhaps only possible in New Hampshire, this bookshelf represents every Democratic candidate running for president in 2008.

The collection consists of the following books and memorabilia, each personally autographed by the candidate:
- Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 - Authored by Sen. Joseph Biden;
- It Takes a Village - By Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton;
- Political memorabilia - Autographed by Sen. Chris Dodd;
- Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream - Edited by Sen. John Edwards et. al.;
- Citizen Power: A People’s Platform - By Sen. Mike Gravel;
- A Prayer for America - By Rep. Dennis Kucinch;
- The Audacity of Hope - By Sen. Barack Obama; and
- Between Worlds: The Making of an American Life - By Gov. Bill Richardson.

Proceeds from the auction will be used as part of the NHYDs fundraising efforts to bring the 2007 Young Democrats of America (YDA) Fall Conference to Manchester for the first time. Approximately 300 Young Democrats from across the country are expected to attend the convention in November 2007. Currently, the NHYDs are in the final stages of bringing the conference to their home state.

“We hope our fellow Democrats and poiticos will bid high on the Primary Bookshelf,” says Gray Chynoweth, President of the NHYDs. “By bringing the YDA conference to New Hampshire this fall, Young Democrats from across the country will see for themselves that New Hampshire citizens are politically active, engaged and that we take the responsibility of having the first presidential primary very seriously.”

The auction will be hosted on www.eBay.com (keyword “Primary Bookshelf”) and the bidding will start on Thursday, May 31st and run through Thursday June 7th. The NHYDs plan to publicize the auction at the state Democratic convention and the Democratic debate at Saint Anselm’s College.

“Anyone involved in politics at all would be thrilled to have this unique collection of political memorabilia on his or her bookshelf,” says Garth Corriveau, Treasurer of the NHYDs. “While no ones knows who is going to come out on top in the 2008 Primary, it’s a safe bet the highest bidder in this auction will have an autographed book from the next President.”

Please contact Katie Judd, NHYD Secretary and Media Coordinator, at 603-xxx-xxxx for more information on the 2008 N.H. Presidential Primary Bookshelf and NHYD’s efforts to host the YDA National Conference.

 NH YOUNG DEMOCRATS ON THE MOVE

Youth Arm of the New Hampshire Democratic Party Increases Membership, Hosts Potential Presidential Candidates and Embraces the Excitement of New Hampshire Politics

CONCORD, N.H. – If you’ve been hearing a buzz around the political scene about the New Hampshire Young Democrats (NHYD), it’s no wonder.  Since January, the organization has elected new leadership, hosted three well-attended events with potential 2008 presidential candidates, increased membership by almost 100 percent and had a presence at almost every prestigious Democratic event in the state, including the 100 Club Dinner and the Governor’s Spring Gala.

And there is even more to come, according to NHYD President Gray Chynoweth.  It’s all part of a vision that aims to engage and involve young people in New Hampshire’s political community.

“We want to bring young people into the political process and help their voices and issues be heard,” says Chynoweth, who was elected as the leader of the organization in January.  “Our events are a good forum for young people to build social and professional networks with folks who share their ideals and values.  And in the process, they might get to meet the next president of the United States.  In my opinion, that is pretty cool.”

One such event was “Brunch with Bayh,” a town hall-style event the NHYD hosted in March for U.S. Senator Even Bayh (D-Indiana) at the Portsmouth home of Justin Nadeau.  Senator Bayh mingled and discussed politics in a room of over 50 young Democrats that gathered to meet him over brunch.  The very next month, the NHYD gathered around for an afternoon cup of coffee with U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) in Manchester.

“Meeting Senator Kerry for coffee is not something you get to do every day, but these events are  characteristic of what we’re doing to involve youth in the political process,” says Chynoweth.  “Only a couple of weeks ago we were invited to sit down and talk politics with Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.  The word got out that we have a good thing going on, and when potential presidential candidates are visiting New Hampshire, they don’t want to miss the opportunity to sit down with us.”

In addition to meeting with nationally-known political leaders and ’08 contenders, the NH Young Democrats are aggressively building their membership base by having social events, such as  Democratic Drinks, which is every third Wednesday of the month in different locations throughout New Hampshire.  The NHYD First Annual BBQ is planned for August 20 features special guests, including first and second district democratic congressional candidates Jim Craig and Paul Hodes, as well as state senate candidates Betsi DiVries, Bob Backus and  Lou D’ Allesandro.

Through these monthly social events and a presence at state political events, NHYD has managed to build their membership from approximately 200 to 370 in less than nine months.

“I am really impressed with the growth of this organization in such a short amount of time,” says Nick Clemons, executive director of the New Hampshire Democratic Party.  “Political leaders are asking about the New Hampshire Young Democrats and the presidential candidates that are visiting New Hampshire want to be included at their events.  I think it’s great.”

Chynoweth agrees that the response thus far has been better than expected and would like to build on the growing momentum of the organization.  “The New Hampshire Young Democrats are more active than we’ve ever been, and we’re ready to make an impact in our state.”

The New Hampshire Young Democrats is an inclusive, statewide organization of 18-36 year olds that exists to excite, engage and involve young people in New Hampshire’s political community; mentor, recruit and empower a new generation of New Hampshire leaders; advance progressive ideals and values; and elect young Democrats.

**Media are invited to attend the NHYD BBQ on Sunday, August 20.  Please visit www.nhyoungdemocrats.org for more information or call Katie Judd at 603-xxx-xxxx.
